Coffee Culture for Kathmandu

Firmly believing in establishing the coffee culture in Nepal, Durga Bahadur Shrestha- one of the founders talked about how it was the need of the hour to establish the restaurant and encourage people about drinking coffee. He added, “ why opt for Cococola when you can enjoy a cup of coffee every day? Both contain caffeine but which one is a healthier option is your choice now.”

Shrestha, a coffee lover as he calls himself talked about establishing the restaurants in unusual places at an affordable rate for the people of Kathmandu. His partner Arjun Chauhan also suggested that “we have established outlets in places where people are most unlikely to opt for coffee but that is the challenge – because we just don’t want to earn profit but make the people of Nepal passionate about coffee.”

In fact, considered one of the most affordable places for students, Highland Beans Coffee opens at 6:30 am in the morning. Focusing especially on making it easy for students and workaholics to eat the right meal before and after college and work. Shrestha talked about the importance of having breakfast in the morning. Although Nepalese opt for having rice right in the start of the day, Highland Beans believes that starting the day with the right breakfast is a much better choice as it is more of a healthier option.

Similarly, for giving back to the society, Highland Beans recently collaborated with Maiti Nepal to help the trafficked women. They have been working on the project “Maiti Cafe” which is a soon-to-be-launched restaurant that is fully operated by these women who were trafficked and have been rescued. Highland Beans is training these women and offering them employment opportunity through this cafe as a part of a social initiative.

Highland Beans Coffee and CSR

Highlighting the importance of coffee culture in Nepal and dealing with such sensitive social reforms, Highland Beans truly stands out in the crowd of the restaurants of Kathmandu. The founder Durga Bahadur Shrestha had insisted on preferring coffee by also adding that, “drinking a cup of coffee at Highlands ;you are not just paying us a price but helping in providing employment to one of the farmers in the high lands of Kathmandu and helping a plant grow to conserve nature at the same time.”

Well quite right, it indeed is establishing the coffee culture in Nepal with a unique way.
